When Christian Mapping Serves the Managers of Discourse

Andrés Spokoiny of the Jewish Funders Network hosted a conversation that presented American Christians as a divided map of mainline decline and non-denominational ascent. The exchange explicitly proposed replacing older biblical arguments for standing with the Jewish people with appeals to generic human dignity.

The host of the Jewish Philanthropy Podcast convened with a representative of Juicy Ecumenism to supply Jewish listeners a sanitized chart of American Protestant fragments. They catalogued the distinctions between mainline bodies and Evangelical congregations, noted the migration into non-denominational megachurches, and concluded that future Christian solidarity with Israel must rest on the thin foundation of human dignity rather than the covenants of Scripture.

This maneuver follows the pattern of the managerial priesthood that has long sought to translate every theological claim into the neutral language of liberal democracy. By design it flattens the Reformed distinction between Law and Gospel and the Augustinian antithesis between the City of God and the City of Man into interchangeable political preferences.

The undivided Church at Nicaea and Chalcedon confessed one Lord, one faith, one baptism; the Reformation recovered that confession against both papal innovation and radical leveling. Those creeds and solas supplied the precise reason many earlier generations of Christians read the promises to Abraham as still binding upon the Church.

When the same promises are now recast as mere respect for human dignity, the ground of obligation shifts from the sovereign decree of God to the fluctuating sentiments of the age. Such a shift does not preserve Christian support for Israel; it dissolves the only durable reason for it.

The actor here is not the Jewish listener but the Christian interlocutor who volunteers to perform the translation. He trades the particularity of the covenants for the universal solvent of ecumenical goodwill, thereby confirming the very caricature he claims to correct.

Scripture nowhere authorizes the Church to revise its public reasons for obeying the Word in order to accommodate the sensibilities of another people. The five solas and the doctrine of justification by faith alone remain the fixed points from which every other obligation, including any obligation toward the Jewish people, must be derived.

The faithful remnant therefore refuses the proposed exchange. It will continue to read the history of redemption covenantally, to confess the creeds without amendment, and to ground every public stance, including solidarity with Israel, in the explicit testimony of Scripture rather than in the rhetoric of the managerial class.

Any other course repeats the error that has already emptied the mainline denominations and reduced their witness to political utility. The remnant chooses instead the older path of confessional clarity.
