The African Majority and the Western Prelates' Last Stand

The bishops of the United Methodist Church, acting through the 2024 General Conference, removed the long-standing prohibition on homosexual practice the same year African congregations supplied the denomination's majority following the exodus of 7,658 American churches and 1.4 million members.

These prelates had already practiced selective enforcement of the Book of Discipline against evangelical congregations, shielding progressive clergy while punishing those who upheld the original standard, until disaffiliation became the only remaining path for doctrinal fidelity.

The resulting regionalization scheme, sold as administrative reform, served instead to insulate the American managerial priesthood from the very African majority whose presence exposed the hollowness of their claims to global inclusivity.

This maneuver echoes the pattern set at the Council of Nicaea, when the undivided Church assembled to confess the faith against Arian innovation rather than accommodate the spirit of the age; here the modern episcopacy chose accommodation over confession.

Scripture, the creeds, and the consensus of the Reformers all locate the authority of the church in the unchanging Word rather than in demographic engineering or financial preservation, a principle the UMC leadership openly subordinated to institutional survival.

The Faithful Remnant that departed understood that no quantity of overseas members could restore a body whose shepherds had already surrendered the moral order revealed in creation and canon.

Those who remain must now choose between continued submission to a partitioned and doctrinally neutered hierarchy or the formation of confessing congregations that recover the full authority of the Book of Discipline under the governance of Scripture alone.
