Shane Gillis refused to recant. After Saturday Night Live severed him in 2019 for jokes that offended the new arbiters of speech, he simply kept speaking the unvarnished line until audiences chose him over the priests of sensitivity.
The Managerial Priesthood that rules entertainment had pronounced sentence through Twitter excavation and institutional fiat. Yet the market of paying customers proved sovereign, and Gillis filled stadiums while the anointed platforms shrank.
This reversal belongs to the long chronicle of the West’s recurring contests between imposed consensus and discovered reality. The same pattern appeared when Luther posted his theses against the indulgence system that claimed sole authority to define truth.
The governing principle is simple: words are not violence, and offense is not a crime against the realm. The Realists of the undivided Church taught that universals exist independent of human opinion; comedy that names what men see cannot be abolished by edict.
The Dispossessors who staff the late-night desks and streaming services operate on the opposite premise. They treat speech as raw material to be licensed, and any unapproved accent or epithet as evidence of disloyalty to the new order.
Gillis’s ticket sales expose the fraud. When enough households withhold consent and spend money elsewhere, the machinery of cancellation loses its power to starve a man of bread.
The faithful remnant in every generation has faced the same choice: conform or endure temporary exile. Those who endure discover that the City of Man cannot ultimately command laughter or silence it.
Therefore the household must now treat entertainment as a front in the same war it has always been. Support the comic who will not kneel, build the venues that will not police the script, and teach the children that truth is older than the latest taboo.
