Vanderbilt University and Washington University have released their Report on the State of Scholarship in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences. The document registers declining enrollments and funding shortfalls yet never names the active agents who replaced the patristic creeds and Reformed doctrines with the managerial priesthood of grievance studies.
That priesthood did not arrive by accident. It followed the long retreat that began when the universities of Christendom, once ordered under the Nicene faith and the sovereignty of God, surrendered their foundations to the Enlightenment project and its later revolutionary heirs.
The report treats symptoms as causes. It speaks of polarization and funding without tracing the collapse to the deliberate expulsion of Scripture, the Augustinian doctrine of the two cities, and the patriarchal household as the first school of virtue.
Western learning once rested on the conviction that truth is discovered under God, not constructed by the latest committee. The present order replaces that conviction with the assertion that every text serves power and every hierarchy must be dismantled.
Such an order cannot sustain the humanities because it has already rejected the very objects those disciplines were meant to study: the soul, the city of God, and the moral law written into creation.
The authors of the report therefore perform the same evasion that has defined the captured academy for two generations. They diagnose without repentance and propose remedies that leave the ideological capture untouched.
The faithful remnant cannot wait for such reports to improve. They must build parallel colleges and credentialing bodies that restore the undivided creeds, the five solas, and the authority of what has been handed down.
Only then will the mind of the West recover its proper object and the household recover its rightful place as the first educator of its children.
