The Catholic editor who claims Christian nationalists remain conservatives reveals the precise fracture line. He admits that European nationalists of the 1800s fought alongside liberals to dismantle dynastic empires and the Church’s restraining authority, yet he declares Americans may adopt the label because they need only guard the existing constitutional order.
This maneuver hands the field to the Managerial Priesthood that has already rewritten the American inheritance into a neutral procedural shell. The editor’s own confession that he holds no stake in preserving a Protestant nation exposes the deeper motive: to detach the historic faith of the founding stock from the very sovereignty nationalists claim to defend.
The principle violated here reaches back to the Reformation settlement itself. When the princes of Germany and the kings of England asserted jurisdiction over their realms under the Word of God, they rejected both papal universalism and the later liberal compact that placed the people’s will above divine law. Christian nationhood was never a liberal innovation; it was the covenantal ordering of a people under Scripture and magistrate.
Metternich understood the threat correctly. The same ideological current that demanded Italians rule Italians without regard for throne or altar prepared the ground for the secular republics that now dissolve every Christian people into interchangeable consumers. The editor’s appeal to “what exists” simply ratifies the present dispossession rather than restoring the order that existed before the liberal rupture.
The governing law remains unchanged: a nation that refuses to confess Christ as Lord over its laws and borders cannot long conserve its own inheritance. The City of Man always offers the nationalist a seat at the table provided he leaves the altar outside.
The Faithful Remnant therefore rejects the false choice between dynastic nostalgia and liberal nationalism. It reclaims the American inheritance as a Protestant and covenantal order, subordinate to the ancient creeds and the sovereignty of God over every sphere.
Every statute, every school, every border must again be measured by that confession. No lesser conservatism will halt the ongoing erasure of the people who built the republic under that standard.
